Wounded warriors play ball with former Red Sox players

LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WHDH) -- It's a baseball fan's dream come true, playing with the professionals.

Some wounded warriors got the opportunity to enjoy America’s past-time, with some former Boston Red Sox players.

Meeting, let alone sharing, the same playing field as some of his childhood baseball heroes is a dream for Michael McComb.

"To me it's a dream. Again, it's still a dream,” said McComb.

Mccomb is part of the Wounded Warrior Program; veterans who are participating in this year's All Star Baseball Fantasy Camp.

Back in 2003, he was injured while serving in Iraq.

"I had the back half of four vertebrae taken out of my neck and since then I have syatic in both my legs,” said McComb.

For this week at least, army reserve Joanne Parisi gets to take a break from the pain of chronic nerve damage and post traumatic stress disorder.

"The pros, they're awesome. They give us a lot of respect, which is great, but we're equals, ya know,” said Parisi.

Equals with the likes of former Red Sox catcher Mark Sullivan.

"These people are heroes the rest of their lives,” said Sullivan.

And bad boy legend Bill Lee.

"They get away from the everyday humbug of life. This is the church of baseball, this is where you want to be,” said Lee.

Wounded while serving, but now indulging in America’s past time in paradise.

"We don't give things down here away for free, you have to earn them and it brings them back to life,” said Lee.

Sponsors paid $3,500 for each wounded warrior to attend the event, which includes the entry fee, round trip airfare, and lodging.
