FORT MYERS, Fla. (WHDH) -- The Red Sox are gearing up for the season as they hit the field for spring training in Florida. The players are seeing some new faces at practice -- but how much love will the Red Sox front office show Jacoby Ellsbury?

The speedy centerfielder is in perhaps his final spring training with the Red Sox, playing under a one-year contract this season and set for unrestricted free agency next year.

“I don’t think that becomes a distraction. He’s a motivated player, and we’re not going to change things in terms of him becoming a pending free agent,” said John Farrell, Red Sox manager.

“Every year you come in with a chip on your shoulder, trying to perform at the highest level. I didn’t change my work ethic. In the off season, I trained just as hard as I always do,” Ellsbury said.

A repeat of his MVP caliber 2011 campaign would pay dividends in Ellsbury's wallet and in the success of this Red Sox team.

“A healthy Jacoby Ellsbury’s a darn good player. One that two years ago set the tone for the team. The type of production was almost middle of the order production, but yet top of the order and can steal a base,” Farrell said.

“I’m focused on just playing and focused on helping the team win. Any questions about contract or anything like that, I think it’s best to just call my agent and do it that way,” Ellsbury said.
