Menino takes final pre-opening day tour as mayor
BOSTON (WHDH) -- It’s his annual pre-opening day tour of Fenway Park, but this year was bittersweet for Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
“This is the end, huh?” said Menino as he arrived at Fenway Park on Friday.
Red Sox President Larry Lucchino welcomed the mayor on his final official tour. The mayor even joked he felt pope-like as he stepped out onto a balcony.
Lucchino and Menino tried out some of Fenway Park’s new attractions, including new Mexican and Asian flavors on the menu.
Menino also had a request -- “Their commitment to me is I leave office. We’re going to have a rolling rally in November with the Red Sox as World Champions,” said Menino.
Menino said his goal is to go on a Duck Boat tour for the first time.
“I haven’t been on a Duck Boat tour. I’ve seen a lot of people on Duck tours. I’ve never been on one. I want to be up there with the World Series Championship,” said Menino.
Fenway Park is also adding new flat-screen televisions to watch in the grandstands, just in case fans find their views obstructed.
Come Monday, Fenway Park will be filled with almost 40,000 fans.
Luchhino said this year is a whole new ball game.
“It’s going to be a scrappy, underdog kind of team. No one’s predicting us to win anything, but it’s okay to be underestimated and overlooked,” said Lucchino.
