Sox players, fans excited for season after opener win
BOSTON (WHDH) -- Following his three-run homer, Daniel Nava received the biggest cheer in the room at the Red Sox Foundation event after winning their home opener on Monday.
And fans waiting outside seemed just as excited as the players.
“It was fun be in home opener obviously. And a big crowd that made it a little bit better. Tight game, glad Nava could come up with a big hit for us,” Clay Buchholz, Red Sox pitcher.
“We appreciate support we'll continue to put a good show on,” said Jonny Gomes, Red Sox designated hitter.
The show was a big win that made fans feel like this team is a group they're excited to root for.
“The fans were great, the weather was great, the hot dogs were awesome and we had a blast,” said Samantha Herwig, Red Sox fan.
Mayor Menino came to the game and saw a special first pitch where cancer patients from the Jimmy Fund tossed out a ball with players from each decade.
There are some new names to start learning from the roster.
“I ran into Mike Napoli and I didn't even -- I just thought he was a regular person,” said Jonathan Rears, Red Sox fan.
Old players and new teammates, who took the stage in a mock game show, are taking the season more seriously, fans say. And everyone hopes it'll add up to a winning season.
“I’m excited. It’s off to a good start,” a fan said.
