Red Sox fan picks up Victorino's grand slam ball
BOSTON (WHDH) -- Red Sox fan Nick Wood wasn't even on planning on being inside Fenway for game six until he learned a friend wouldn't be able to go.
He took the ticket and ended up picking up the baseball Shane Victorino hit for the grand slam Saturday night.
Fenway faithful went crazy when Victorino smashed the grand slam. Everyone was on their feet cheering - maybe so much so that no one was ready to catch the now famous ball.
Wood says he is the one who picked it up off the ground.
"We were just jumping up and down and I heard this security guard screaming at us, saying, 'Ball, ball, ball!' And I looked down and it was literally rolling in between our feet. Everyone was coming over to us but I guess it took a bounce off of one of the signs and it was literally next to my shoe. I grabbed it and after that it was just mayhem,” said Wood.
Since then, he hasn't let it go. The senior at URI had a parade of sorts Sunday with the ball, making a stop at a restaurant in Naragansett.
He's been sleeping with it under his pillow and keeping it in his pocket.
"I'm just overwhelmed by it, I guess, because everywhere I go, people are asking to talk to me but it's really cool,” said Wood.
Wood said he doesn't know what he's going to do with the ball but said he would consider trading it for tickets to the World Series.
“I guess I would like to keep it for now, see what happens. I’m just excited about the World Series and that's about it,” said Wood.
Wood says he isn't really thinking about what he will do with the baseball in the future. Right now, he is just focused on the World Series.
