The 2004 'Idiots' versus the 2013 'Get Beards'
BOSTON (WHDH) -- The Red Sox are preparing for another World Series rematch with the National League’s best team. The St. Louis Cardinals have beaten the Sox two out of three times in the fall classic.
But back in 2004, a group of self-proclaimed “idiots” brought baseball's championship back to Boston. Now it’s a comparison of the 2004 "Idiots" versus the 2013 "Get Beards."
"We're a bunch of grownup idiots. We did the impossible," said Johnny Damon, Former Red Sox outfielder.
In 2004, Damon dubbed his team a loveable bunch of idiots.
This year, the 2013 team has done two things well: play baseball and grow beards.
“I really can’t control it, it has a mind of its own,” said Mike Napoli, Red Sox first baseman.
Veteran players like Damon, Kevin Millar and Pedro Martinez led their idiots, coming back after being down 0-3 to the Yankees in the ALCS.
“It was a magical year, I don't think there will ever be another year like that one,” said Anthony Miller, Sox Fan.
Newcomers like Jonny Gomes and Mike Napoli started the scruff phenomena during spring training.
Not as a fashion statement, but a way to build a stronger bond after the team struggled so badly last season.
“I challenged some of the players to jump on board and sure enough it's made it this far,” said Jonny Gomes, Red Sox outfielder.
Fans say both teams were amazing to watch. One broke an 86-year curse, and the other going from worst to first.
