Valentine apologizes after Sports Xtra comments
BOSTON (WHDH) -- Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine appeared to call out third baseman Kevin Youkilis in an exclusive interview with 7Sports Director Joe Amorosino Sunday.
Bobby Valentine gave a surprising response when asked about Kevin Youkilis' slow start. Youkilis wanted an explanation and Valentine gave him one, along with an apology.
Bobby Valentine has never been one to shy away from controversy and he proved it again Sunday night on Sports Xtra.
"I don't think he's as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason," said Bobby Valentine, Red Sox Manager.
The Sox new skipper had some candid remarks about Kevin Youkilis' slow start to the season. Youkilis didn't see it coming.
"That's not what I see. I go out every day, play as hard as I can, take every groundball in the morning, take every at-bat like it's my last, and I don't think my game has changed at all," said Youkilis. "I'm more confused than anything else, because I think everyone knows I go out and play the game as hard as I can."
Youkilis and Valentine spoke privately before Monday's game, with Valentine trying to smooth things over.
"I totally apologized I said, 'Jesus, the last thing in the world I want you to think is that I’m criticizing you'" Valentine said. "I should have been more specific and said, ‘your physical is about your swing, and your emotional is about your not being happy when you don't hit a ball off the wall.’"
Valentine said he wasn't sure if Youkilis accepted his apology, and Dustin Pedroia added fuel to fire with comments in defense of Youkilis.
"I don't really understand what Bobby's trying to do, but that's not really not the way we go about our stuff around here," Pedroia said. “I’m sure he’ll figure that out soon.”
Valentine said he didn’t mean to be critical.
Pedroia's comments though, may have been the most "inflammatory" of all.
