Jason Varitek may return to Boston for job with Sox

BOSTON (WHDH) -- Former Red Sox captain Jason Varitek said he is close to taking a new position with the team.

Varitek and others from the 2004 World Series Championship team were honored at Fenway last night.

According to ESPN, Varitek could be named a special assistant to GM Ben Cherington.

There had been speculation that Varitek might be a successor to manager bobby valentine.

The Red Sox have not announced any details.
