BOSTON (WHDH) -- With the Sox finishing last in the division, many fans had been calling for Valentine to be fired.
Less than year ago he put on the Red Sox jersey - full of hope and proud as can be. But now it's over and Red Sox nation seems pretty excited to see this man hitting the highway.
“He’s got to go. He’s just got too much mouth and he’s not backing himself up with anything else,” said John O’Neill.
The two top Buick sales teams in New England got to play on Fenway’s field of dreams; the same day that Bobby V got the axe.
“He didn’t do the job. It’s a business and he went out and didn’t perform. So we got to get somebody to perform because we can’t have a repeat of this year,” said Tom Frat.
Fans have a message for Red Sox brass -- including the GM and the team's CEO.
“Cherington has a lot to prove and Lucchino needs to be held accountable,” said Jay Hedlund.
The Sox say it will be Ben Cherington who will lead the search for a new manager. Most fans are glad change is coming -- but not all apparently.
“I’m a little outraged you know, ‘cause he’s like part of the city. I was outraged he got fired, I mean, give him another chance, see what happens you never know,” said Samantha McKenzie.
What do Yankee fans think? Maybe they've had fun watching the bombers beat up on the Sox this week but 7News found one guy who longs for a better Red Sox manager so the competition will be better.
“I knew Bobby was the wrong guy for the job. I knew it when they were interviewing him. I was telling everybody that because I saw the meltdown at the end of his career when he was on the Mets,” said a Yankees fan.
Several fans 7News spoke with said they’d like to see Terry Francona return as the Sox skipper.
Since Valentine has one year left on his contract, he will still get paid $2 million.
