Surf picks up on Cape as Earl moves in

CHATHAM, Mass. – The surf began to pick up Friday on the Cape as Hurricane Earl rolls in.

While the storm seems to be weakening, people on the Cape aren’t getting their hopes up just yet.

“I’ve still got to keep an eye on it because you can’t take it too lightly, you never know. But you’ve got to take all of the precautions and do what you’re supposed to do, and after that let mother nature take care of it,” said Bill Delande, who is vacationing on the Cape.

On Main Street in Chatham it was barely noticeable that Earl was on its way. Vacationers still packed the streets walking from shop to shop even though many of the windows of local businesses were already boarded up. For now, it’s a waiting game.

“You never know until the last minute when it gets here what it might do, but you should be prepared by now, but I would keep an eye on it,” said Bill Neiser from the Chatham Harbormaster Department.

Off the beaches, shops are welcoming customers, but hoped to turn away some unwelcomed guests.

Seeing that it was only foggy and starting to get windy many were trying to enjoy as much of their Friday afternoon as they could before they start to feel the effects of Earl.

Plenty of people also hit the beaches to look out on the ocean as the waters started to get rough.
