Brazil: Clashes mar protest against Rio governor
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- Clashes have erupted in Brazil at the latest in a months-long series of protests against Rio de Janeiro stare Gov. Sergio Cabral.
Riot police used tear gas on several hundred protesters gathered late Monday in front of the governor's palace in a sleepy residential neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. A small group of protesters lobbed stones at police, set fires in garbage cans and destroyed bus stops.
Protests against Cabral started in June amid a wave of nationwide demonstrations complaining about corruption and high taxes and demanding better government services. While the mass movement petered out, small protests pressing for Cabral's impeachment have continued.
Demonstrators contend Cabral is corrupt and are calling for investigations into the state government's spending on the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.
