BERLIN (AP) -- German police say no dangerous materials have been found in a sweep of the U.S. consulate in Berlin.

The consulate was evacuated as a precaution today after an employee reported a strange smell from an envelope. An embassy spokeswoman says the envelope contained supporting materials for a visa application. It was given to consular employees in person by the applicant.

Police experts checked the building to see of any chemical substances or poisonous gases had been released, but a police spokesman says nothing was found.

There's no word on the status of the person who brought the envelope in.
