The mission of Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA) is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of well-coached Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Massachusetts also provides athletes with continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community programs, express courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics Athletes, and the community.

There are over 10,000 Special Olympics athletes in Massachusetts - and we are always looking to grow our programs. We welcome all athletes and all ability levels. With 26 sports to choose from and programs in every town in Massachusetts, there is bound to be an opportunity that is right for you. Contact the Sports Program at 978-750-0190 and they will direct you to a coach or program in your area.
If you or your child are between the ages of 3 -8 and of any ability level you can join the Young AthletesTM program! This program is designed to address two specific levels of play: Level 1 includes physical activities designed to develop fundamental motor, tracking and eye-hand coordination play. Level 2 concentrates on the application of these physical activities through a sports skill activity program and developing skills consistent with Special Olympics Sports play. This program comes with lesson plans, skill kit, videos, training guides, and materials. Contact Joe Siegel via email or call 978-750-1042.
Special Olympics Massachusetts provides year-round athletic training and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The training, of course, requires dedicated volunteer adult and teen coaches who can work with one or more athletes on a regular basis.
Regardless if you have experience coaching or not, Special Olympics Massachusetts needs you. You bring the enthusiasm and some knowledge and we will provide the training you need to be a successful coach. When you become a coach, you will find the rewards go far beyond the finish line. You will help athletes discover their physical skills, their self-worth, their courage and their capacity to grow.
Being a SOMA coach is one of the most important and rewarding volunteer roles. That is why 8,000 men and women in Massachusetts choose to share their time and talent with SOMA athletes. Please contact George Kent, with any questions regarding coaching for Special Olympics Massachusetts via e-mail or by phone at 978-750-0632.
