The Road to Sunshine
Posted by Pete Bouchard
Pretty disappointed with the sun's feeble appearance today. What? You missed seeing the disk of the sun through the clouds in Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill and Newburyport?
Yeah, I guess it was fleeting...and selective...and weak. Fitting display in this wet, dreary pattern.
We're still fending off the rain tonight. This time, however, it's fighting back...and it has plenty of backup.
The setup is familiar: stalled weather system and a train of rain rippling along it. This time the firehose of rain is focused on the Cape Cod Canal and surrounding towns. I'm seeing storm totals of 2-3" in this area by the time the rain exits tomorrow morning!! That's a lot of water, but thankfully it should just cause the bogs and lowlands to fill, thanks to the fact that we've been in a drought since the first of the year. Nevertheless, expect a slow ride in the VERY early morning (5-7am) along Rt. 3, the lower end of I495 and Rt. 6: lots of ponding and wheel spray on the roads.
There's more than optimism about sun tomorrow. Drier winds blowing in from the west will dry out the atmosphere and bring back the sun. With an unstable airmass overhead, we could still pop up a shower in the afternoon, however. Ditto for Friday as the temps dip a hair.
The weekend however, is looking dandy. Sunshine, temps in the mid 70s, a drying west wind...how did we manage that?
Um, I think I'll stop right there for fear of jinxing it.
Be well.

Wild & Wacky

Wild temperatures yesterday---from the 80s down into the low 60s in just an hour AND some heavy duty thunderstorms. The reason was a cool front that dropped in from Maine. That front is in western New England this morning and it's a chameleon as it will become a warm front and try to warm things back up during the day.

What a day! Breakneck temperature swings, thunder, tornadoes in Western Mass....and we're still in late May!

More Warmth

You have another warm & humid day with many towns repeating yesterday's weather. That means we start with clouds & fog for a bit before hazy sun gets going. That hazy sunshine will boost temps up into the low 80s by early to mid afternoon across much of the region. At the same time a cool front will begin dropping out of Maine (backdoor front) which will quickly send temps from the 70s/80s down into the 50s/60s by late afternoon & evening. Also, when this front rams into the warmth & humidity it will spark a few showers & thunderstorms during the afternoon.

Summ-ah!

With the snap of the fingers we were thrown into summer this afternoon. Heat, humidity, A/C and shorts - with a hazy sun to boot. But with the sea breeze knocking back the temperatures (and bringing in a round of downpours this evening), there are changes afoot.
