Sunday Improvements

Posted by Chris Lambert

Damp and dreary weather this afternoon settled in, and despite highs running a good 6-8 above the average, the clouds and fog didn't help.  It felt like a clammy day in March.  Although, all and all, I guess it could be worse.

Worse it will be tonight, the fog that is.  With light winds/no wind, dew points near the air temp (means 100% humidity) and a cold ground with warm air aloft, it's a perfect set-up for dense fog to form.  In fact, a dense fog advisory is in place until 9AM Sunday for visibility under 1/4 mile at times.  In addition, patches of mist are with us as well.

Despite an ugly looking start Sunday, I do think there will be some improvement Sunday afternoon.  We won't see much sun, but the fog lifts, and a few bright spots in the overcast appear as temps head toward 50.  Low 50s and dry for the Pats game!

We'll hit 50+ again early Monday... but this is the last 50 degree day for the foreseeable future as colder weather works in.  The coldest day on the 7-day is Friday as highs struggle to get out of the 20s.  If you think that's cold... wait until the following week when the bottom drops out on the mercury.

Long range forecast models have been remarkably consistent in showing high pressure building in over the Arctic in the Jan 21st-25th timeframe.  When this occurs, the brutally cold air across the Arctic and in northern Canada gets dislodged, and pushes south.  This go around, it appears the Midwest and Northeast will be in the path of some of the coldest air we've seen in a couple of years.  It was two years ago on January 24th that Boston had a high of 13 and a low of -2.  Time will tell if we can challenge those numbers.  Forecasting patterns 10-14 days certainly can be challenging, but the signals for cold air are there.

Whether we near those icy numbers or not, at least I'm more optimistic for those backyard skating rinks making a marvelous comeback.  I'd use the afternoons this mid week coming up to freshen them up and pour more water on top.  They will freeze solid with colder days ahead!

Enjoy the weekend and Go Pats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More Warmth

You have another warm & humid day with many towns repeating yesterday's weather. That means we start with clouds & fog for a bit before hazy sun gets going. That hazy sunshine will boost temps up into the low 80s by early to mid afternoon across much of the region. At the same time a cool front will begin dropping out of Maine (backdoor front) which will quickly send temps from the 70s/80s down into the 50s/60s by late afternoon & evening. Also, when this front rams into the warmth & humidity it will spark a few showers & thunderstorms during the afternoon.

With the snap of the fingers we were thrown into summer this afternoon. Heat, humidity, A/C and shorts - with a hazy sun to boot. But with the sea breeze knocking back the temperatures (and bringing in a round of downpours this evening), there are changes afoot.

Feet First

Right into summer. Warm & humid weather expected for much of the week. Good?.....Well, keep in mind that warmth & humidity are the 2 key ingredients for thunderstorms. The last being something to *lift* that warm/humid air. Usually a front is a good device to do such that. Today, we will have a cool front approach New England very late in the day & evening. That may lead to an isolated storm or two after 4pm but most towns just have a fair amount of clouds, warmth & humidity. Temps will climb to near 80 by afternoon.
