Snowing
Posted by Jeremy Reiner
Snow! Some winters it's just about daily (2 winters ago) while others it never happens (last year). This year it's been location location location. Coastal cities & towns have seen very little while out in the Worcester area, snowfall has been just about normal. Just about all of us see some snow today---even at the coast.
Here's the thinking on our storm:
*Timing---steadiest snow falls from 5am until 12pm today. This is when the accumulating snow happens. Looks like 1-3" along the coast & 3-5" likely along & west of Interstate 95. After 12pm, look for patches of light snow & light rain.
*Travel---Poor this morning across the entire area. Road conditions will improve through the afternoon. main roads will be wet for the evening commute. Neighborhood streets/ sidewalks/ parking lots will slowly improve during the afternoon.
*Temps/Wind---Not a big storm so little if any wind and temps will hang around 30-35 for much of the day.
That's it! As we step into the evening hours, that sloppy slush will harden up as lows drop into the 20s under a partly cloudy sky.
We are dry & seasonable tomorrow but will watch an ocean storm tomorrow night & Friday morning. I do think the storm will throw snow onto the Cape/Islands & south shore late tomorrow night & Friday morning. It looks like 1-3" Boston to the Canal is possible and perhaps 3-6" out on Cape Cod/Islands. The weather improves during the day on Friday---but the temps don't, cold with highs in the 20s!

Although my forecast was busted today, there was one good thing that came out of it.
Stability.
That gray overcast that hung over the eastern half of the Commonwealth provided a stablizing influence to our atmosphere. The cool air blowing in from the ocean kept the temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s all the way back to Metrowest. While that makes for lousy short-and-t-shirt weather, it is poison to thunderstorms.

Wild temperatures yesterday---from the 80s down into the low 60s in just an hour AND some heavy duty thunderstorms. The reason was a cool front that dropped in from Maine. That front is in western New England this morning and it's a chameleon as it will become a warm front and try to warm things back up during the day.

What a day! Breakneck temperature swings, thunder, tornadoes in Western Mass....and we're still in late May!

More Warmth

You have another warm & humid day with many towns repeating yesterday's weather. That means we start with clouds & fog for a bit before hazy sun gets going. That hazy sunshine will boost temps up into the low 80s by early to mid afternoon across much of the region. At the same time a cool front will begin dropping out of Maine (backdoor front) which will quickly send temps from the 70s/80s down into the 50s/60s by late afternoon & evening. Also, when this front rams into the warmth & humidity it will spark a few showers & thunderstorms during the afternoon.
