Storms, Heat, Sea Breezes
Posted by Pete Bouchard
What a day! Breakneck temperature swings, thunder, tornadoes in Western Mass....and we're still in late May!
First off, the storms. Threat has diminished - and in Eastern Mass. it never even got going thanks to the sea breeze. Storms dropped tremendous amounts of rain in Southern Worcester County, however. From Southbridge to Dudley, Webster and Douglas the water came down in torrents! Reports of hail in Southbridge that piled up to 1"+ on decks!
Back to the sea breeze. It kept Boston pinned down in the upper 60s, but when reinforcements came down from Northern New England, the sea breeze got its second wind and pushed all the way out to Worcester. Now here's the thing with the sea breeze: when it comes in from the ocean it typically knocks the knees out of the storms. They decay rapidly and dissipate. HOWEVER, in some cases, they can enhance the storms - as they did out around Worcester this afternoon. Funny little things those sea breezes.
Now that the cool air is in place, will the warmth come back? Youbetcha. Starts gloomy and cool in the morning, then the clouds and fog peel back for a warm, humid afternoon. Thunderstorms will be few and far between - if at all - in the afternoon.
Thursday was the next day of potentially severe weather, but now it looks like the front that could have triggered it will be delayed. Storms still could fire up, but without a lot of lift to the atmosphere, they should remain to our west and be weaker. We'll keep you apprised.
In any event, the weekend will still be bright and dry. Humidity lowers and we get a few cool afternoons (60s) and mornings (40s). All in all, a heck of a week to unofficially start summer.
Storm damage reports from this afternoon are here.
